Course Overview

Why Perform a Fit Test?

If you provide RPE to your employees it is essential that you have documented evidence to show the RPE fits the wearer. By subjecting each wearer to a face-fit test you can ensure that your organization is fulfilling the requirements laid out by the regulations.

What Types of Mask require fit Testing?

There are two types of fit test – Qualitative & Quantitative. The type of fit test which should be performed is dependent on the face piece being tested. As a rule, Filter Face Pieces (FFP) & Half Masks can be tested using a Qualitative method, this includes disposable and re-usable types. All other tight fitting face pieces such as full face mask respirators must be tested using a Quantitative test method.

When Should Fit Testing be carried out?

A Fit Test should ideally be carried out in the initial stages of selecting respiratory protective equipment (RPE). However where an untested face piece is already in use, and providing it is in good condition it can also be used to perform the fit test. An employee should not need to be re-tested unless one of the following occurs:

You companies policy changes relating to fit testing.
Your employee undergoes extensive dental treatment.
You gain or loose weight excessively
Facial hair growth occurs in which your tight fitting face piece is ineffective and you are now at substantial risk.
Fit testing does not need to be done annually. It is however recommended that face piece wearers receive annual training covering the selection, use and maintenance of their mask. When face pieces are issued on an individual basis, it is recommended that they receive an individual assessment on their own face piece.

Please note that in order for face fit tests to be successful, trainee’s MUST NOT eat, drink or smoke for at least 30 minutes before the test is performed. They must also be clean-shaven as stubble will prevent a good seal and the face fit test will fail.

For this course you will need to bring your RPE (face mask).

If you don't have a mask, we have a range of masks available to purchase contact our experts on 0808 168 6788 for more details.
